Nunavut’s premier says the territory has recorded its first COVID-19 death during the Omicron wave.
P.J. Akeeagok is sharing his condolences with the person’s family and community.
It’s the fifth COVID-19 death in Nunavut since the start of the pandemic almost two years ago.
Chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson, says he won’t share any details about the death for now.
Akeeagok also says the federal government has said it will provide Nunavut with three extra nurses and nine contact tracers to help with the ongoing outbreak of the virus.
Nunavut’s territorywide lockdown lifted Monday and schools are expected to open on Jan. 24.
There are 177 active cases of COVID-19 spread over 17 communities.
