Montreal police investigators were trying Tuesday to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl who turned up unharmed soon after an Amber Alert was triggered.
Police received a 911 call around 11:10 p.m. on Monday night about a possible kidnapping at a restaurant in Kirkland, Que., a suburb west of Montreal, Const. Manuel Couture said.
Witnesses told police the teen was allegedly taken from inside the restaurant and forced into a vehicle by at least one suspect, believed to be the alleged victim’s brother, who left before police arrived.
Fearing for the girl’s safety, major-crimes investigators elected to issue an Amber Alert at around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, advising the public to be on the lookout for the girl and to avoid approaching the suspect.
Couture said that soon after the alert and the ensuing media attention, the victim turned up at a local police station. On Twitter, police said she was found unharmed at around 7 a.m. in Montreal.
Couture said three people were under arrest as of Tuesday afternoon, including the 22-year-old male suspect initially identified in the Amber Alert. A fourth person was also briefly detained but released after being cleared.
“Investigators will have to determine the circumstances that led to this event, and they will have to verify the (involvement) of each person that has been arrested,” Couture said.
Police could not provide details about where the other arrests were made or specify any links between those arrested and the victim.
