The killing of three adults in a small western Manitoba community was an act of intimate partner violence by a man who was already the subject of a protection order, RCMP said Wednesday.
“The survivor and family (are) going through an unimaginable loss,” Staff Sgt. Richard Sherring, of the RCMP’s major crime services unit, told reporters.
RCMP were called to a road near the community of McCreary, near Riding Mountain National Park, Friday morning where they found the body of 41-year-old Marlon Glover, who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
They went to a nearby home where they found the bodies of a 66-year-old woman, and two men, aged 65 and 35. They were the parents and brother of Glover’s former partner, who had been granted a protection order against him last year, Sherring said.
The woman who had taken out the protection order was later found in a wooded area near her home, where she had been hiding for several hours.
Sherring said the investigation in the days following the killings has revealed that Glover forcefully entered the home of his former partner around 1 a.m., and the woman managed to escape and hide in the woods.
Glover then left for the home of the woman’s relatives, killed them, then drove away and shot himself, Sherring said.
Court records show the protection order the woman obtained last year required Glover to stay away from her home, not follow her and surrender his firearms.
Glover had two firearms and ammunition seized, Sherring said, but somehow had another firearm last week.
“This is an aspect that still remains under investigation,” Sherring said.
RCMP also said there had been “calls for service” related to the protection order after it was issued, but refused to discuss details.
The case comes six months after a woman, three children and a teenager were killed in Carman, Man., west of Winnipeg.
Ryan Howard Manoakeesick was charged with five counts of first-degree murder in that incident. He is accused of killing his common-law partner, Amanda Clearwater, three of Clearwater’s children and a niece.
