A funeral home in Cape Breton will be barred from offering cremations for two months following an investigation that confirmed a wrongful cremation last December.
The crematorium licence for Forest Haven Memorial Gardens in Sydney, N.S., will be suspended as of April 28.
Last month, the provincial registrar of embalmers and funeral directors concluded the business had violated the Embalmers and Funeral Directors Act for failing to ensure proper identification of human remains.
As a result, the licence of the funeral director involved was revoked.
Service Nova Scotia Minister Colton LeBlanc issued a statement saying no family should have to endure such an experience.
In its notice of decision, the regulatory body found there was a mix-up between two bodies at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, which resulted in the wrong body being sent to the funeral home.
The notice says the funeral director in charge that day did not open the body bag to check the identification of the remains.
