Jay Peeaychew of Team Poitras Relay closes in on the rider in front of him during the Indigenous Relay Racing at the Calgary Stampede.

Team Poitras Relay, from the Saulteaux First Nation, is one of ten teams competing in the Indigenous Relay Racing at the Calgary Stampede. The sport is a fast and frantic display of horsemanship with a long history steeped in cultural significance. Much like an Olympic relay race, except instead of a team of runners taking turns, these races feature one rider who switches between three different horses.

Jay Peeaychew and Aleyha Poitras prepare to compete in the race.
