Relish in the region’s natural beauty

Niagara Falls is a stunning wonder of the world. But for as magnificent as it looks up close, it might be even grander from afar. To catch panoramic views, take a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel or head up the Skylon Tower for its observation deck and revolving dining room.

But Niagara’s outdoor fun doesn’t stop there: There are plenty of places within the region to spend a crisp fall day in nature. A scenic drive north up the Niagara Parkway will take you to the Niagara Glen conservancy area, which offers panoramic views of a lush gorge carved out by the Niagara River. It’s a great spot to take in the vibrant changing colours that come with autumn in Ontario. From here, you can hike down to the Niagara River itself, where the fast-moving rapids offer another, awe-inspiring perspective on the power of Niagara Falls.

Just up the parkway are the Niagara botanical gardens and butterfly conservatory, neighbouring attractions that are lush with thousands of plant and insect species, easy to get lost in over a few hours. When driving between environmental attractions, don’t forget to keep an eye out for roadside fruit stands; there’s ample opportunity to stop for farm-fresh local produce at spots like Plekan’s Market or Falk Family Farms.

Wander through the province’s best wineries

To many outside the province, Niagara isn’t the first place that comes to mind for quality wine. But the region is home to a range of award-winning wineries with specialty offerings like ice wine and the bold flavours of natural wine. Whether you’re looking to book a tour, popping in to grab a bottle for dinner or picking something up to bring back to your friends, there are plenty of cellars in which to stop.

If you prefer getting around on two wheels, you can grab bicycle rentals from Zoom Leisure Bikes in Niagara-on-the-Lake and head off on a network of bike trails that lead you between vineyards. A short ride down the road will take you to the Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant, which serves high-end farm-to-table cuisine, or Two Sisters Vineyards, which has a homier feel and a cozy Italian restaurant.

There’s something for every wine-lover in Niagara, but be sure to book tastings and tours ahead of time, as walk-ins aren’t as easy during pandemic operations.

Step back in time in Niagara-on-the-Lake

There are few better places in Ontario for an afternoon stroll than the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The area played an important role in Canada’s inception as a nation and many of the buildings here date back to the early 1800s.

The historic district offers a selection of heated patios and quaint storefronts for window shopping. Be sure to stop by COWS, a popular new ice cream and frozen yogurt spot with a charming yellow exterior and all the classic flavours.

The Prince of Wales Hotel is also worth a visit: This posh spot hosted the Queen during a royal visit in the 70s and its regal dining room is a great place for high tea or a decadent meal. A short walk up the street takes you to the Queen’s Royal Park, where you can just make out Toronto’s skyline across the lake on a clear day.
