Omar El Akkad is a former reporter for The Globe and Mail. Prior to becoming the newspaper's Western United States reporter, he worked as the technology reporter, parliamentary correspondent at the Ottawa bureau and general assignment reporter in Toronto.

Omar has covered many stories across the U.S., including dispatches on the new generation of Silicon Valley corporate giants, the mass protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Arab Spring revolution in Egypt.

Omar is the recipient of a National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting and the Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prize for young Canadian journalists, and has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards. He is a graduate of Queen's University with a BSc (Hons) in Computing.
