Kathryn Blaze Baum

Kathryn Blaze Baum is an award-winning reporter on The Globe and Mail's investigative team. Since joining The Globe in 2013, she has probed systemic failures of the criminal justice and child-welfare systems, raised awareness of Indigenous issues, and exposed shortcomings of government programs, including in her role as a parliamentary reporter in the Ottawa bureau.

Her years-long coverage of the issue of Canada's missing and murdered Indigenous women contributed to policy changes at the provincial and federal levels, particularly as it relates to the emergency placement of foster children. Baum's noteworthy work also includes an investigation into the failures of Canada's temporary foreign worker program during the COVID-19 pandemic, enterprising reporting on extreme weather and climate adaptation, a deeply reported first-hand account of her year-long recovery from a concussion, and coverage of major breaking news events, such as the 2013 Boston marathon bombing and the 2014 Moncton mass shooting.

Earlier, as a reporter for The National Post, she traveled to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, to New York for the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and to several U.S. states for the 2012 presidential election. She appeared on Dan Rather Reports for her investigative work on Canada’s historic adoption practices. Before moving to Toronto, she was a Manhattan-based stringer for The New York Times, writing for the Metro and Business Day sections and covering the 2008 presidential election.

Baum, who hails from Winnipeg, lives in Toronto with her husband and three children.
