Janet McFarland is a senior editor overseeing the financial services coverage for The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business. As part of her role, Janet oversees a group of reporters and columnists who cover industries such as banking, insurance, wealth management, capital markets, institutional investing, corporate law and securities regulation. She joined Report on Business in 1995 and spent many years as a reporter, covering topics such as real estate, corporate governance, executive compensation, pension policy, business law and securities regulation.

In 2002, she was instrumental in launching the Globe's Board Games project, an annual review of corporate governance practices of Canada's largest companies. Janet has also written extensively on issues related to women in leadership. She is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Carleton University, and has received a number of awards for her work. She has been nominated six times for National Newspaper Awards and has won twice. She has also received three nominations for Michener Awards, which are granted annually by Canada’s Governor General to recognize excellence in public service journalism.

Janet was awarded a Southam Fellowship under a program allowing journalists to spend a year studying at the University of Toronto. In 2014, she was the inaugural winner of the Landsberg Award, presented by the Canadian Journalism Foundation and the Canadian Women’s Foundation to recognize a journalist giving greater profile to women’s equality issues. Before joining the Globe, Janet was a reporter at The Financial Post and The Winnipeg Free Press.
