More than 500,000 people are expected to line up this Sunday to watch the centenary edition of the parade, which features 25 floats, 20 musical bands and 1,500 costumed volunteers. Here, tips on how to manage the crush.

Best spot: The parade route narrows around Queen's Park Circle, allowing little ones the chance to get up close and personal. Try to get there well before 11 a.m. to snag a choice vantage. Make sure you bring a cushion or such to sit on; sidewalks tend to get cold.

Worst spot: Avoid standing near subway entrances. Too crowded and kids get easily jostled by hurried commuters.

What to bring: Pack lightly but nutritionally. Hot dog vendors abound and prices for coffee or water bottles suddenly shoot up along the route. Youngsters are easily appeased with hot chocolate in a Thermos and a few granola bars.

Must-see float: Not to slam Santa's big finale, but this year, watch for the Mother Goose float, modelled after a 1959 design.
