After a beleaguered two-year search, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has chosen Roberto Minczuk, 37, of the New York Philharmonic, to succeed Hans Graf as its new music director.

The appointment of Minczuk, who studied at the Juilliard School in New York, comes on the eve of the Calgary Orchestra's 50th-anniversary season.

Graf left Calgary to become the music director of the Houston Symphony.
