Join Margaret Atwood and Globe subscribers in our book club. Atwood will pick a title by a Canadian author to discuss in coming weeks, culminating in a live event on May 24.

The book-loving community in Canada is active, strong – and opinionated.

Since we brought Books back into the weekend Arts section, we’ve heard from authors, publishers, booksellers and, most important, readers. You’ve told us that you want The Globe and Mail covering books in a thoughtful and substantial way.

The Globe's book club: How to participate

To that end, we’ve increased our weekly offering of reviews, particularly Canadian titles. We’ve broadened our coverage of genres, ideas and trends. We’ve also tried to connect more directly to readers’ lives. We’ve shown what readers are snapping up at Fanfare Books in Stratford, Ont. And did you know there was an eight-course dinner and book launch in Victoria?

In feast or in famine, books are an integral part of our everyday lives.

So when one of Canada’s most venerable authors, Margaret Atwood, proposed working with The Globe to launch a book club, we saw a great opportunity to create our own live community of readers.

Margaret will be the first host of our new Book Club, which is open exclusively to subscribers. (This is part of our member benefits program, which connects subscribers more closely to our journalism and our network of experts.)

She will reveal her pick on Wednesday and explain why she chose this book – why it matters now. Then, each week for the next five weeks, we’ll post new discussion topics. You’ll be able to discuss the book on our site using our comments system. You’ll also get an opportunity to ask both Margaret and the author questions.

Our book club will culminate in a live discussion, open to subscribers on a first-come, first-served basis, between Margaret and the mystery author on May 24 at The Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto.

We look forward to talking books with you.

To be notified about the book pick and the event tickets – as well as our latest reviews and articles – sign up for our Books newsletter at tgam.ca/booksnewsletter.

To register for the live event, go to tgam.ca/experiences on April 24, when registration will open. This is complimentary to subscribers.
