Ed Burtynsky’s Anthropocene, which he wrote with Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier, is based on their exhibit at the National Gallery. The book was the popular non-fiction pick at this Elgin Street mainstay. “It has much to do with a very ecologically conscious demographic. The images in the book, while focused on a set of global issues, remind people of their responsibility to act locally and to engage socially and politically,” Sherman says. Meanwhile in fiction, Eric Dupont’s Songs for the Cold of Heart “was a welcome relief from the recent onslaught of non-fiction that seems to unearth so many ugly truths," Sherman added. “It’s a joyful and playful romp of a story. Many of our customers read all of the Giller short list. It may also have sold well here because of our proximity (literal and figurative) to Québécois culture. I’m hearing the translation was particularly good. Nothing like a bit of magic realism to erase the pain of watching the nightly news."
