FedEx has one of the best perks in any business: free airplane trips anywhere the company flies. But with the slowdown in cargo traffic that followed Sept. 11, job security concerns loomed larger. FedEx has made Fortune magazine's list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America, and it made the 35 Best in Canada list last year. FedEx's motto is "People, Service and Profit." "We have an all-for-one mentality," says David Russell, 35, a senior manager in downtown Toronto. Even he picks up a broom occasionally (as shown on our cover): "When things need to be done, people pitch in." Said Karimi, 25, an operation administrative agent, says morale remained high as the economy slowed last fall. FedEx redeployed employees to avoid layoffs. Generous benefits reinforce the feeling that the company is committed to staff for the long haul. "Our tuition refund program is one of the best," says Karimi, who studies finance part-time at Ryerson University and who received a $1,200 tuition refund last year. "I think it's incredible that we offer full benefits to all of our part-time employees," says Gerald Benoit, 42, a senior courier. "This includes our pension program, which for me shows that the company wants to invest in the future of everyone."
