A 23-year-old man was charged Thursday with performing an indignity to a dead body, about two weeks after a woman's body was discovered in a Toronto alleyway, concealed in a rolled up carpet.

The 31-year-old woman's body was found Feb. 1 by a local man who was walking his dog. He said he thought something was amiss when he saw the carpet behind his home near Clendenan Avenue and Maria Street in the Junction neighbourhood.

Homicide detectives initially probed the case but it was later handed over to the local division. Police then said it was not a homicide. Officers called it suspicious but didn't disclose the cause of death.
